Meningococcal disease is a dangerous illness caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. This bacteria can cause irritation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), as well as bacteremia, a severe blood infection. Without prompt treatment, meningococcal disease can lead to permanent neurological damage or even death.
